OU Backstory: There’s not much known about this version of Harlock’s childhood, save that he was a “Born outlaw” and that he was best friends with Tochiro since they were very young.
At around 21, the two friends met Emeraldas, an infamous pirate who attempted to hire them to assist her, but out of stubborn pride, they refused – only to end up being caught by the very same corrupt warden of a prison planet. The pair managed to sweet-talk their way into becoming guards, which they took advantage of, with Harlock taking out the guards and Tochiro to plant bombs. It turned out the Warden was the very same person Emeraldas had wanted to take out, and realizing Tochiro’s interest in the pirate and the pirate being impressed with how efficiently they took down her enemy, Harlock played wingman, with the two falling in love, and eventually having a child named Mayu – who becomes Harlock’s goddaughter.
During the brief time, the three lived together with other outlaws as Tochiro worked on The Arcadia, hiding the fact that he was slowly dying of an illness from his wife and best friend. When the crew were forced to evacuate the planet due to a falling moon, the stress of rushing to finish the Arcadia and fleeing was enough to kill Tochiro, and Emeraldas in grief and believing she’s unfit as a parent left, leaving Mayu entirely in Harlock’s care – who tend placed her in a boarding school, visiting her whenever he can when it wouldn’t put her in danger. Tochiro may have died, but his spirit stuck out, his soul possessing the ship – enabling the Arcadia to act on its own to rescue it’s crew and captain, and take over navigation when the people onboard are asleep.
By the time the series proper rolls around, Harlock is a notorious pirate whose presence spooks Earth’s defense force and has been framed for the mysterious murders of astronomers, and in an attempt to save an old ally’s life, he discovered there was a covert vanguard for an imperialistic alien race. And with just one ship, a crew of forty oddballs, he faced an armada, with combined wit and sheer grit, forcing them to surrender their claim on Earth by personally dueling with their Queen, defeating her in combat despite the Mazones’ absolute certainty that they’re the superior race.
Once everything was done – the Mazones were repelled, but the Earth is devastated with the seat of government destroyed, and the Arcadia had suffered damage. Harlock basically decided he is Tired and Done, and went off into space by himself with very strong implications that he intends to die out somewhere remote.
Powers and Abilities: Harlock has no supernatural powers, except perhaps an ungodly willpower – the non-canon sequel Endless Odyssey depicts him as being willful enough to no-sell an eldritch being’s attempts to frighten to death even when she literally held his heart in her hands, and even forcibly ordered her off his ship – terrifying her in the process, the midquel comic showed him to be the last to succumb to the Mazone of Despair’s effects (locking people into their worst nightmares), and snaps out of it the instant he realizes Mayu is in danger.
For mundane abilities, Harlock is a skilled swordsman, and shown to be an accurate shot with guns and knives at mid-range even though he’s missing an eye. He’s somewhat ambidextrous, shown to wield both sword and gun in hand, and is an incredible pilot - able to bark off the precise degree needed to navigate the Arcadia in the depths of space.
As discussed, The Arcadia – a frighteningly powerful space battleship will be locked down at an Empire installation until it’s time bust it out. His gravitational saber (which is a rapier-laser pistol) and gun (that is designed to take down cyborgs) will be locked away for study, and will be bailed out soon.

Ten Questions:
Why do you wish to join the Crimson Corsairs? To be frank, I need my ship back and I detest those who steal the freedom of others.
Why should the Crimson Corsairs allow you to join them? I know my way around ships, I know to fight - and I am a man who never goes back on his work, once I make an oath, I am good for it.
Have you ever lost a comrade? How did you react? [Harlock's expression softens, a rare unguarded vulnerability before he steels himself] My eternal friend, I still carry that flame of his in my heart, to carry his half of our shared dream.
What is something you will lay down your life for? Freedom.
How do you handle orders from a superior officer? [Harlock just laughs] I'm sorry, I should answer honestly - it depends on the order, if it's something I feel like doing, I will do it, but if not, well - what do you expect from a pirate?
When is it appropriate to take a life? In self-defense, in the defense of others, for if someone tries to oppress the masses.
Many Crimson Corsairs will die in the line of duty, how does that make you feel? Each one deserves a drink in their honor and a promise to continue the fight. Every life is important.
What are you willing to do to preserve the secrets of the Crimson Corsairs? Well, I did survive those fools trying to extract information about my ship - I think I can keep your secrets.
What would you refuse to do in service of the Crimson Corsairs? I refuse to attack unarmed civilians, or go back on any promises I made.
Many Crimson Corsairs must serve Imperials to preserve our cover and gather resources. How do you feel about this? I understand - it's not a pleasant situation for them, but trust and verify.
What are your dreams for the future? To return to the sea of stars.
Describe a failure in your past and what you learned from it. I made the mistake of walking into an ambush I knew was there in the arctic, nearly ended up in an ice coffin. I learned not to get so cocky as to ignore a friend's warning, and that all ambushes operate in the same manner.
